Author(s): Araman, Philip A.
Date: 1988
Source: Proceedings, The Global Advantage of the South in Forestry and Forest Products. pp. 45-58
Description: Dramatic changes have taken place in the U.S. hardwood export market since 1975. World demand for U.S. hardwood logs, lumber, and veneer has quadrupled. Exports to Europe and particularly the Pacific Rim, have grown significantly. The focus of this presentation is on the Pacific Rim and Middle East markets. Reasons for overseas demand of U.S. hardwood products are presented. Also addressed is the importance of exports to our primary industry and the Southern hardwood resource situation. The benefits from increasing hardwood exports of non-select species from the South is presented along with ways to expand the Southern hardwood industry through utilization of the present quality of sawtimber and resulting lumber.
