| Description: | Since 1959, area of commercial forest in Central Florida has declined from 3.2 to 2.7 million acres, or 16 percent, excluding the reclassification of 1.7 million acres from non-stocked forest to natural rangeland. Some 589,400 acres were actually diverted from commercial forest to other land uses, while only 56,400 acres of new forest were added. Volume of softwood timber has increased by 218 million cubic feet, or 25 percent. Volume of hardwood timber has increased by 146 million cubic feet, or 23 percent. In 1969, net growth of growing stock exceeded removals by an estimated 35 million cubic feet, or 73 percent. Since 1959, over 40 percent of the timber removals have resulted from land clearing where the timber was not used for products. |
