The Forest Service has released proposed planning directives for public review and comment. The proposed directives are a key set of agency guidance documents that, once finalized, direct the implementation of the 2012 Planning Rule. The proposed directives will help the Forest Service achieve the vision articulated in the 2012 Planning Rule – to protect and restore National Forests and Grasslands for the benefit of communities, natural resources and the environment. The Agency’s intent is to ensure an adaptive land management planning process that is inclusive, efficient, collaborative and science-based to promote healthy, resilient, diverse and productive national forests and grasslands.
A notice of availability of proposed planning directives was published in the Federal Register on February 27, 2013. The Agency is in the process of completing the final directives and is considering and incorporating feedback that will improve and support consistent approaches to achieving the broad goals of the 2012 Planning Rule. A copy of the proposed directives can be found here.
